Anthropic Launches AI Fluency Index as AI Emerges as a Thinking Partner in Education

AI company Anthropic used the 4D AI Fluency Framework, developed jointly with Rick Dakan and Joseph Feller, to assess whether people can treat Claude as a thinking partner instead of simply handing tasks over to the model. The research shifts the focus from how often people use AI to the quality of their prompting, collaboration, output evaluation and revisions.

Anthropic released its AI Fluency Index on February 23, 2026, using privacy-preserving tools to analyze 9,830 multi-turn Claude.ai conversations from one week in January 2026. It found that 85.7% involved iteration and refinement. Those conversations exhibited an average of 2.67 additional fluency behaviors, about twice the 1.33 recorded in non-iterative conversations. Users in iterative exchanges were also more likely to challenge the model's reasoning and provide additional context.
