Greece to Ban Social Media for Under-15s From 2027

The impact of social media on children’s mental health and digital dependency has become a growing policy concern across Europe. Greece says rising anxiety and internet addiction among young people require stronger safeguards than parental supervision or voluntary platform controls alone. The planned age restriction marks an effort to treat children’s online access as a regulatory issue while adding momentum to broader European debate over platform accountability.

Greece’s prime minister said the country will ban children under 15 from using social media starting in 2027. The government plans to enforce the restriction through its “Kids Wallet” age-verification tool. Athens is also urging the European Union to establish common, cross-border rules for social media platforms, arguing that a coordinated framework would reduce differences between national regimes and make enforcement against multinational technology companies more consistent.
