Shield AI Co-Founder Backs Smaller AI Systems to Cut Battlefield Losses

Founded in 2015 by Andrew Reiter and other entrepreneurs, Shield AI develops artificial intelligence and autonomous systems for defense missions. Reiter argues that the purpose of military technology should extend beyond combat effectiveness to protecting service members and civilians. Small autonomous machines can enter dangerous environments, gather intelligence and perform high-risk tasks before humans are exposed, potentially reducing both casualties and the financial cost of losing conventional military equipment.

Reiter recently traced his work from compact autonomous drones to humanoid robots, advocating smaller, scalable systems powered by advanced AI algorithms as alternatives to some costly legacy platforms. He left Shield AI in 2023, worked on humanoid robotics at Boston Dynamics and returned to the defense-technology company in early 2026. The latest report disclosed no new funding round, contract value or product price, focusing instead on his view that warfare need not inevitably produce human casualties.
