Study Flags 63% of Amazon Religious Books as Likely AI-Written

Generative AI has lowered the cost and speed barriers to self-publishing, allowing books to reach Amazon without the editorial, fact-checking or academic review common at established publishers. The risks are acute in religion and belief titles, which may shape readers’ health choices, spiritual practices and understanding of doctrine. Originality.ai’s findings therefore point to a credibility and consumer-protection problem, although detection scores indicate probability rather than proving that a book was written by AI.

Originality.ai said on Aug. 19, 2026, that it examined 2,034 English-language paperbacks across 14 Amazon religion and belief categories during the first half of 2026. It flagged 1,272 titles, or 63%, as likely AI-written. Rates were highest in witchcraft at 78%, Hinduism at 76% and Taoism at 74%; 53% of fact-checkable claims in witchcraft books were marked potentially false. Suspected AI-written books averaged $16.84 and 170 pages, versus $18.96 and 208 pages for titles considered likely human-written.
