GitHub Copilot Shifts to Token-Based AI Credits in June
GitHub Copilot, the company’s AI coding assistant, has largely been sold through subscriptions that include allowances for advanced requests. Replacing that system with AI Credits would tie charges more closely to token consumption and the cost of running different models. The shift is significant for developers and corporate technology buyers because it reflects a broader move across the generative AI industry from predictable monthly access toward metered, usage-based pricing.
GitHub said the new AI Credits model will take effect on June 1, 2026, covering both individual and enterprise Copilot plans. Companies will be able to pool usage across their organizations, while charges will vary with token consumption. Some reports estimated that heavy users could see monthly costs rise from $29 to as much as $750, fueling criticism from developers concerned about pricing transparency and the difficulty of forecasting software budgets.

GitHub Copilot has expanded from a code-completion tool into an AI agent capable of running lengthy, multitask workflows, driving up token usage and inference costs. GitHub says some requests cost more to process than an entire month's subscription fee. That suggests fixed-price plans such as the $10-a-month Pro tier and $39-a-month Pro+ tier can no longer support heavy agent workflows while maintaining reliable service.
On April 20, 2026, GitHub paused new applications for Copilot Pro, Pro+ and Student plans, while Free remained unaffected. It also tightened session caps and token allowances calculated every seven days, with the Pro+ cap more than five times that of Pro. Pro users can no longer access Opus models, and existing paying subscribers may request refunds through May 20.
