Solana Launches Onchain Governance Framework SGP
Solana previously relied largely on forum consensus and validator signaling to set the protocol’s direction, leaving it without a verifiable record of onchain decisions. The Solana Foundation has introduced Solana Governance Proposals (SGP), under which the community first decides whether an initiative should proceed, while Solana Improvement Documents (SIMD) handle the technical implementation. The framework clarifies the division between ecosystem governance and engineering upgrades.
The Solana Foundation activated SGP on July 1, 2026. Validators with at least 100,000 delegated SOL may submit proposals, a stake worth about $7.7 million at July 2 prices. A proposal must first secure support from 15% of the network’s active stake to advance to a vote, then win approval from two-thirds of the participating stake weight to pass. Delegators may also override their validator’s vote.
