Google Deploys Gemini AI Agents to Help Pentagon Automate Tasks

The U.S. Department of Defense has expanded its procurement of generative AI through the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office in recent years, signing contracts with Google, OpenAI and other companies in July 2025. Gemini’s arrival at the Pentagon shows commercial AI moving beyond administrative support and into military workflows. It has also renewed debate over how technology companies should restrict defense applications.

As of July 2026, Google is deploying Gemini AI agents at the Pentagon, initially to organize data and automate workflows on unclassified networks, while discussing deployment in classified environments. The contract is worth up to $200 million. More than 600 Google employees have signed a petition calling on CEO Sundar Pichai to establish clear red lines for sensitive military uses.
