Loopring Shuts DEX and Relayer, Plans User Refunds
Loopring was an early pioneer of zk-rollup technology, helping demonstrate that zero-knowledge proofs could scale trading on Ethereum. The project raised $45 million in a 2017 initial coin offering and later worked with GameStop on its NFT marketplace. Its specialized architecture, however, lacked a virtual machine and composability, limiting smart-contract and real-world payment applications as newer zkEVM platforms including zkSync, Scroll and Starknet gained ground.
Loopring said on June 28, 2026, that its decentralized exchange and automated market maker would cease trading immediately, with the relayer also going offline. The team plans to publish final balances and allow a two-week review before returning ETH, ERC-20 tokens and converted AMM positions directly to users’ Ethereum Layer 1 wallets in batches, while covering gas fees. Loopring’s total value locked had fallen to about $8 million, nearly 99% below its November 2021 peak of $760 million.
