UK NHS Makes Hundreds of GitHub Repositories Private Over AI Security Concerns

Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) has long made some software projects publicly available on GitHub for developers to review and collaborate on. But as advanced AI models become capable of rapidly extracting and analyzing vast amounts of code, publicly accessible source code and system architecture could be used to identify vulnerabilities. Such risks are particularly sensitive because the NHS handles confidential medical data and critical public services.

The NHS recently ordered hundreds of public GitHub repositories to be made private, reducing the risk that AI could analyze source code and architectural details at scale. The NHS said the temporary measure would remain in place while it assesses advances in AI and their cybersecurity implications.
