FBI Warns of Impostor Token Scam on TRON Seeking Users’ Personal Data
TRON’s TRC20 standard allows anyone to issue and airdrop tokens at low cost, enabling scammers to deliver phishing messages directly to wallets and invoke the FBI’s name to create pressure under the guise of law enforcement. The case highlights that an on-chain token does not constitute official endorsement. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center recorded $9.3 billion in cryptocurrency fraud losses in 2024, up 66% from a year earlier.
The FBI’s New York office warned on March 19, 2026, that a fraudulent TRC20 token impersonating the agency claimed recipients’ wallets were subject to an anti-money-laundering investigation. It directed users to a website to submit identity and wallet information or face an asset freeze. The token was created around March 11 and has reached 728 wallets, several of which hold more than $1 million in USDT. The number of victims and the amount lost have not been disclosed.
