Google Tightens Android Sideloading Security With Advanced Flow and Cooling-Off Period

1 reports · First detected 2026-03-23 · Last active 2026-03-23

Android has long allowed users to bypass Google Play and sideload APKs, offering greater flexibility but also giving scammers a channel for distributing malware. Google is therefore raising installation barriers in an effort to disrupt social-engineering schemes and prevent the theft of Android users’ login credentials, financial information and assets.

Google has introduced a new “Advanced Flow” that requires users to enable developer mode and restart their devices before installing an unverified APK. They must then wait through a 24-hour cooling-off period and verify their identity using biometrics. A formal rollout date has not yet been announced. The new system uses mandatory delays and multiple verification steps to reduce the risk of victims completing installations while following scammers’ real-time instructions.
