Cloudflare Forecasts AI Bot Traffic Will Overtake Human Activity in 2027
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince had predicted that crawlers and agents powered by generative AI would push machine traffic above human activity in 2027. AI can access about 5,000 pages in the time it takes a user to browse 5, putting pressure on content licensing, cybersecurity defenses, digital sandboxes and other internet governance mechanisms to adapt.
Cloudflare’s latest data shows non-human activity already accounts for about 34% of internet traffic, while AI crawler traffic is growing at roughly 8 times the rate. Recent monitoring also found that some web request volumes generated by bots have exceeded those from humans for the first time, with AI agents accounting for the largest share. That suggests the traffic crossover originally expected in 2027 may already have arrived.
