Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Commits $500 Million to AI Biology Research

Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a nonprofit research organization backed by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, has long combined biomedicine, engineering and AI. Its virtual biology vision calls for training models on large-scale open datasets to simulate how human cells respond in healthy and diseased states. The aim is to improve understanding of disease mechanisms and accelerate drug development.

Chan Zuckerberg Biohub announced on April 29, 2026, that it would invest $500 million over five years to launch the Virtual Biology Initiative. Of that, $400 million will fund data generation, imaging and related technologies, while $100 million will support external laboratories and research. Its existing AI biology datasets cover about 1 billion cells. The team aims to increase the volume of data by at least one order of magnitude and make the results available to the research community.
