Google Seeks US Approval for AI-Guided Release of Sterile Male Mosquitoes
Google life sciences subsidiary Verily's DeBug program uses Wolbachia bacteria to prevent male mosquitoes from producing viable offspring when they mate with wild females, helping suppress Aedes aegypti populations. Female mosquitoes transmit diseases including dengue and Zika, making AI computer vision's ability to accurately separate the sexes and safely scale up releases a key element of public health control efforts.
As of July 20, 2026, the DeBug program had applied to release 32 million sterile male mosquitoes in California and Florida. It plans to use automated AI computer-vision screening to prevent biting females from being included. Google's earlier trial in Singapore reduced dengue cases by 70%. The application did not disclose an operating budget, and the plan remains subject to regulatory approval.
