BSTR Founder Says Bitcoin Treasury Sector Still Has Its Share of ‘Carnival Barkers’

Adding Bitcoin to corporate balance sheets can give shareholders leverage and enable active treasury management, but it can also turn a company into a proxy for the cryptocurrency’s price. Standard Chartered warned as early as June 3, 2025, that a sharp drop in Bitcoin could trigger liquidations, while tighter regulation and a maturing market could also erode premiums on treasury stocks. Companies must therefore demonstrate that they can create more value than simply holding Bitcoin or investing in an ETF.

In a Cointelegraph interview published on May 30, 2026, BSTR co-founder Sean Bill said some operators lack the capital structures and ability needed to deploy Bitcoin effectively. According to BitcoinTreasuries, 198 publicly listed companies collectively hold 1.25 million Bitcoin. Bill warned that companies unable to generate additional value would drive investors toward ETFs.
