AI Giants Anthropic, Google and OpenAI Expand Investment and Presence in India

India has more than 700 million smartphone users and generates about 20% of the world’s data, yet stores only about 3% domestically. With at least 121 major languages and a vast engineering talent pool, the country has become a key market outside China for AI companies competing for users, training data and computing demand. It is also an important pillar of India’s push to build domestic digital infrastructure.

On February 19, 2026, the CEOs of Anthropic, Google and OpenAI appeared alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a summit in New Delhi. Google will invest $15 billion in AI infrastructure; Anthropic has opened its first India office in Bengaluru, while OpenAI is partnering with Tata Group to build data centers. The Indian government expects AI investment to exceed $200 billion over the next two years.
