IBM Agrees to Buy HRL, Adds Silicon-Spin Track to Quantum Strategy
Quantum computers promise to tackle calculations that would overwhelm conventional machines, driving a race among IBM, Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft and other technology groups. IBM has built its roadmap around superconducting qubits, while HRL Laboratories brings expertise in silicon-spin qubits, quantum dots and quantum sensing. Buying the Boeing- and General Motors-owned laboratory gives IBM a second hardware track and a broader base for linking quantum computing, sensing and advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
IBM said on July 23, 2026, that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories from Boeing and General Motors. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the transaction is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. IBM plans to explore spin-qubit production with Anderon, the pure-play quantum wafer foundry it announced in May with U.S. Commerce Department support. Boeing and GM will remain partners in quantum applications and advanced technology development after the deal closes.
