AlphaFold’s Widespread Adoption Shifts Life Sciences Research From Static Structures to Dynamic Functions

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-01 · Last active 2026-05-01

Google DeepMind and the European Bioinformatics Institute launched the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database in 2021, turning structural predictions that once required expensive laboratory equipment and years of research into a publicly accessible resource. The project lowered barriers to life sciences research and drug development and involved no transaction value.

In July 2022, the AlphaFold database expanded to more than 200 million predicted protein structures, covering most proteins known to science. As static structure prediction becomes increasingly accessible, research is shifting toward proteins’ dynamic interactions inside cells, different isoforms, complex biochemical reactions involving multiple molecules, and experimental validation of their functions.
