US Urges G20 to Take Light-Touch Approach to AI Regulation

Artificial intelligence regulation has become a central fault line in global technology policy, as governments weigh safety concerns against investment and innovation. The US is promoting the “Carolina Principles,” a light-touch approach that favors applying existing laws and avoiding layers of new rules that could slow development, raise compliance costs and constrain the commercial returns expected from AI.

At a recent Group of 20 technology meeting, US officials urged member states to limit regulatory intervention in artificial intelligence and consider the Carolina Principles as a guide for global governance. Executives from OpenAI, NVIDIA, Meta and Google also joined the talks. No binding framework, financial commitment or implementation date was announced, leaving governments to continue negotiating how common AI rules should balance oversight with competitiveness.
