Teen Scattered Spider Suspect Extradited to US Over $8 Million Crypto Ransom

The multinational hacking group Scattered Spider has long posed a major global cybersecurity threat, targeting companies in the United States and Britain with ransomware and cryptocurrency extortion attacks. Using tactics including social engineering, the group breached more than 120 corporate networks and forced at least 47 U.S. companies to pay as much as $115 million in ransom. Its August 2024 breach of Transport for London caused losses of up to £29 million, drawing close attention to the case from the international financial and technology sectors.

Woolwich Crown Court in Britain formally sentenced two hackers linked to the group to five and a half years in prison on July 16, 2026. Both had pleaded guilty at their first court appearance on June 22, 2026. The ruling marks a major success in joint U.S.-UK efforts against transnational cyber extortion, creates a significant deterrent to cryptocurrency-related crime and demonstrates law enforcement agencies’ commitment to protecting corporate cybersecurity.
