US Government Accelerates Federal Quantum-Safe Encryption Deadlines to Counter Cyber Threats
If quantum computers become sufficiently advanced, Shor's algorithm could break widely used public-key encryption methods such as RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography, which protect banking, government and military systems. The threat of “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks has already emerged. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has established post-quantum cryptography standards, while the federal transition is estimated to cost about $7.1 billion over 10 years. Financial institutions will also face pressure to replace existing systems.
President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14412 on June 22, 2026, requiring federal high-value assets and high-impact systems to adopt post-quantum key-establishment mechanisms by December 31, 2030, and quantum-safe digital signatures by the end of 2031. The US Department of Commerce must complete a NIST migration pilot by the end of 2027, bringing the transition forward by about four to five years from the original 2035 timeline.
