Bitfinex Bitcoin Longs Hit 28-Month High, Raising Contrarian-Signal Risk
Bitfinex is a major cryptocurrency exchange whose BTC/USD longs measure the size of traders' leveraged bets on a rise in Bitcoin. Because large accounts and highly leveraged positions are concentrated on the platform, a sharp increase in the gauge is often viewed as a sign of overheated sentiment. Previous surges in long positions have coincided with price peaks and selloffs, earning the indicator a reputation as a contrarian signal.
Even as Bitcoin fell for five consecutive days, Bitfinex traders doubled down on bullish bets, pushing BTC/USD longs to 79,343, their highest level since November 2023 and a roughly 28-month peak. The increase against the market trend suggests whales are buying aggressively, but historical patterns have also put bears on alert. If prices fail to stabilize, liquidations of highly leveraged long positions could amplify further declines.
