Morgan Stanley Eyes Potential Acquisitions as Capital Builds
Morgan Stanley's capital strength and expansion strategy are closely watched given its status as a global investment banking powerhouse. As regulatory requirements increase, a bank's capital levels reflect not only its ability to withstand risk but also its flexibility to expand. Morgan Stanley has actively developed core businesses including wealth management in recent years, making its deployment of excess capital an important indicator for consolidation and competition across global financial markets.
At the company's second-quarter earnings call on July 16, 2026, Chief Executive Ted Pick said Morgan Stanley's common equity Tier 1 capital ratio stood at 14.8%, 300 basis points above its 11.8% regulatory minimum. The bank has also accumulated $18 billion in CET1 capital over the past 10 quarters. While organic growth remains its priority, Pick stressed that Morgan Stanley would not rule out deploying excess capital through acquisitions.
