xAI Launches Grok Build, a Terminal-Based AI Coding Agent
As AI expands beyond chat into autonomous development, terminal-native coding agents have become a key battleground for technology giants. AI company xAI has launched Grok Build, embedding AI directly into the command-line interface. The tool challenges the traditional integrated development environment workflow by eliminating the need to switch frequently between browsers and editors. It also signals a broader shift in AI agents from providing prompts and assistance to autonomously planning and executing software tasks.
In its latest move, xAI formally open-sourced Grok Build on July 15, 2026, allowing developers to run it locally to protect code security. The tool uses the Grok 4.5 model, released on July 8, by default and can run up to eight subagents simultaneously to accelerate development. Developers can access the underlying AI model service through an API priced at about $1.25 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens.

xAI is pushing Grok beyond conversational AI with Grok Bot, an autonomous agent designed to operate across applications and keep working around the clock. Grok Bot entered public testing in August, while Elon Musk said Grok 4.6 would arrive later the same week. Subsequent reports said xAI had released the model, with benchmark results matching GPT-5.6 in some tests and stronger coding capabilities becoming available through Cursor. Investor Gavin Baker called the product xAI’s “Claude Code moment” and said it had increased his own AI usage by roughly 100 times, though the reported benchmark and productivity claims remain vendor- or user-reported.

xAI has launched Grok Build, entering an AI coding-agent market contested by OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and others. The command-line tool can help write code, update documentation and troubleshoot performance. Plan Mode lets developers review an execution plan before proceeding, while a multi-agent system can handle tasks in parallel.
As of July 19, 2026, the Grok Build early-access release had rapidly advanced to v0.2.11. xAI has also hired two key Cursor staffers as it races to catch up with Claude Code. The tool is expected to be added to the SuperGrok subscription, making it available to users of the $30-per-month standard plan.
