Anthropic Joins Frontier Carbon Removal Coalition as Commitments Rise to $1.8 Billion
Frontier was launched in 2022 by companies including Stripe and Google. It uses an advance market commitment model, pledging to buy carbon-removal credits before the underlying technologies reach commercial scale. The coalition originally planned to purchase $1 billion of credits by 2030, reducing market risk for developers and helping permanent carbon-removal technologies expand.
Frontier announced on June 17, 2026, that Claude developer Anthropic had become the first AI startup to join the coalition. Members also added $915 million in purchase commitments, bringing the total from about $1 billion to $1.8 billion, nearly doubling it. Anthropic’s individual contribution was not disclosed.
