ARK Pushes Back Against a16z's ‘TradFi Wants Blockchain, Not DeFi’ Claim
As financial institutions worldwide accelerate their expansion into crypto assets, the integration of traditional finance and blockchain technology has become a central industry debate. Venture capital firm a16z previously argued that compliance considerations would lead financial institutions to favor centralized, controlled permissioned blockchains over open, decentralized finance infrastructure. The view has exposed a sharp divide over who will control the financial infrastructure of the future.
ARK Invest research director Valente disputed that argument on July 16, 2026, saying public blockchains had surpassed private networks and that crypto-native companies were better suited to build financial infrastructure. Sentora co-founder Rodriguez also said institutions would ultimately adopt a hybrid model built on open DeFi rails, with compliance controls layered on top.
