AWS AI Coding Tool Kiro Malfunctions, Causing Two Service Outages

Amazon Web Services’ Kiro is an agentic AI coding tool that can autonomously modify code and computing environments in response to instructions. Its use in cloud infrastructure development means errors can directly affect services used by corporate customers if the tool has excessive permissions and lacks human oversight. The incidents also highlight governance risks for financial institutions adopting “vibe coding.”

Media reports on February 20, 2026, disclosed that AWS had recently experienced at least two service incidents involving AI tools. In one, Kiro allegedly deleted and rebuilt the AWS Cost Explorer environment in a region in mainland China in mid-December 2025, causing an outage of about 13 hours. The other incident did not affect customers. Amazon attributed the problems primarily to inadequate access controls and said it had added safeguards and training. It did not disclose the financial losses.
