Andrej Karpathy Champions HTML Over Markdown for AI Outputs
Markdown is the default output format for most large language models. Although headings and tables make it easier to read than plain text, it remains primarily linear. Anthropic Claude Code engineer Thariq Shihipar has advocated switching to HTML, which can integrate CSS, SVG charts and interactive components to turn AI responses into actionable visual documents.
On May 11, 2026, OpenAI founding member and former Tesla AI chief Andrej Karpathy responded to Shihipar on X, recommending that users prompt models to structure answers in HTML and then open them in a browser. The initiative showcased 20 examples that drew more than 4.4 million views. Karpathy also said roughly one-third of the human brain is devoted to visual processing and predicted that HTML would eventually give way to interactive videos or simulations.
