Warp Open-Sources Terminal, Adopts Agent-First Development Workflow

Warp launched its Rust-based terminal on April 5, 2022, after five years of development, and now has nearly 1 million active developers. As AI agents increasingly take on planning, coding and testing, development bottlenecks are shifting to defining requirements and validating results. Open-sourcing the client also marks a pivotal step in Warp’s evolution from a terminal tool into an agentic development environment, or ADE.

On April 28, 2026, Warp released its client source code on GitHub under the AGPL license and introduced an agent-first workflow managed through Oz, its cloud-based agent collaboration platform. AI handles planning, coding and testing; the community sets the direction and validates the results; and the Warp team reviews and publishes releases. OpenAI is the founding sponsor, supporting the workflow with its GPT models. Neither company disclosed the sponsorship amount.
