Google Cuts Operational Emissions 2% Despite AI Infrastructure Power Surge
Google is continuing to expand its data centers and servers to support generative AI services such as Gemini, driving up electricity use for computing and cooling. The company has pledged to achieve round-the-clock carbon-free energy and net-zero emissions by 2030, making its ability to grow AI without erasing previous emissions reductions a key test of the technology industry's climate commitments.
Google's latest environmental report showed that the expansion of its AI infrastructure increased electricity consumption by 37% in 2025 from a year earlier. Even so, operational carbon emissions fell 2% year on year through renewable-energy procurement and greater AI computing efficiency. Data-center construction, however, continues to outpace the decarbonization of power grids worldwide, putting greater pressure on Google's 2030 climate targets.
