Coinbase's x402 AI Payments Protocol Joins Linux Foundation with Big Tech Backing

3 reports · First detected 2026-04-02 · Last active 2026-04-05

Developed by Coinbase, x402 uses the HTTP “402 Payment Required” status code to let AI agents, APIs and applications initiate card or stablecoin payments directly. It addresses the high costs and cumbersome processes traditional financial systems face when handling high-frequency micropayments, while reducing the risk of vendor lock-in through an open standard.

Coinbase and Cloudflare proposed establishing a foundation on September 23, 2025. The Linux Foundation announced that it would take over stewardship of the protocol on April 2, 2026, with support from 23 companies at the time. The x402 Foundation formally began operations on July 14, with membership rising to 40 companies, including Google, AWS, Stripe, Visa and Mastercard. Officials did not disclose funding or transaction volumes.

x402 Foundation Advances Open-Source Payment Standard for AI Agents2026-07-16 · 1 reports · similarity 0.84

As the artificial intelligence era takes hold, the internet’s lack of a native payment mechanism is creating bottlenecks for AI agents and automated systems conducting cross-platform transactions. To address the problem, the Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation to revive the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code and establish an open payment standard for machines and humans. The initiative could enable AI agents to pay one another directly and seamlessly, providing a key building block for a future autonomous-agent economy.

The Linux Foundation announced the launch of the x402 Foundation on July 14, 2026. Coinbase open-sourced the protocol in 2025, and 40 organizations have since joined the initiative, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and the Stellar Development Foundation. The organization will promote the protocol so AI agents can automatically and securely pay for cloud and API services using stablecoins or traditional payment rails.
