Old-Line Japanese Manufacturers Emerge as AI Chip Winners
Japan’s TOTO, glass-fiber maker Nitto Boseki and food group Ajinomoto have emerged as unlikely beneficiaries of the artificial-intelligence investment boom. Their expertise in ceramics, specialty glass and amino-acid chemistry underpins electrostatic chucks used in wafer fabrication, low-dielectric glass fiber for circuit boards and Ajinomoto Build-up Film, or ABF, an insulating material for advanced chip substrates. Demand from AI servers and data centers has turned these hard-to-replace products into critical supply-chain links.
As of July 22, 2026, shares of TOTO, Nitto Boseki and Ajinomoto had climbed 78%, 63% and 61% this year, respectively. For the year ended March, TOTO posted record revenue of 737.4 billion yen and operating profit of 53.8 billion yen. Nitto Boseki’s revenue rose 8.4% to 118.2 billion yen and operating profit increased 26.6% to 20.8 billion yen, while Ajinomoto plans to invest more than 25 billion yen in ABF capacity by 2030.

Ajinomoto, which began mass-producing ABF in 1999, now supplies a key material used in packaging substrates for advanced processors. The report did not disclose new investment amounts or dates for individual orders, but said demand for the relevant materials and components has accelerated since generative AI expanded in the 2020s, prompting the companies to broaden their semiconductor operations.
