Google Unveils Biggest Search Overhaul in 25 Years With Gemini 3.5 and AI Agents
Google Search is a key gateway to information for more than 2.5 billion people worldwide and a cornerstone of Alphabet’s advertising revenue. As generative AI reshapes how users find and organize information, Google is undertaking its biggest Search overhaul in 25 years. The company is turning its traditional keyword-based search engine into an AI platform that can understand multimedia content and carry out tasks directly.
At Google I/O 2026, Google unveiled a “smart search box” powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash that accepts text, image and video inputs. In addition to generating answers and recommendations, the new system can use AI agents to handle bookings, shopping and software development automatically. Search results will also feature more advertising. Google is accelerating the global rollout despite rising computing and operating costs.
