Cybersecurity Daily: Linux Dirty Frag Flaw and AI Model Abuse Fuel Attacks

Dirty Frag is a local privilege-escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel that could allow attackers with access to a low-privilege account to take control of an entire system. Because all major Linux distributions are affected, the flaw poses broad risks to enterprise servers and cloud environments. The incident also shows that generative AI has become part of hackers’ attack workflows, extending the threat to critical infrastructure.

After the Dirty Frag vulnerability was disclosed in a May 8 cybersecurity report, Microsoft issued a further warning that it had seen signs of possible exploitation, suggesting the flaw may no longer be limited to proof-of-concept attacks. The same report said hackers had abused AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI to launch a large-scale intrusion targeting water and drainage systems at Mexican government agencies. No financial losses have been disclosed.
