Meta Patent Reveals Threads’ Semantic Algorithm and Recommendation System

Meta launched text-based social platform Threads in July 2023, integrating it with the Instagram account system and using a recommendation feed to help content reach users beyond an account’s existing followers. Because the platform has not fully disclosed its ranking rules, Meta’s patent filings offer important technical clues about how reach is allocated, how content spreads and how creators can shape their strategies.

A recent analysis shows that Threads’ core system converts users and posts into semantic vectors and uses similarity scores to determine which users receive particular content. Posts are first tested with concentric audience groups, then distributed more broadly in stages and assigned to topic clusters. The system also filters out low-quality engagement signals to prevent them from distorting recommendations. The report did not disclose the patent’s filing or approval date or any related financial amount.
