Amazon Plans $50 Billion OpenAI Investment That Could Hinge on AGI
OpenAI has long relied on Microsoft as its main cloud and funding partner, but the vast computing power and capital needed to train frontier models have prompted it to diversify its infrastructure providers. Amazon, meanwhile, is using the investment to secure demand for AWS and its in-house Trainium chips. The partnership also reshapes OpenAI’s dependence on Microsoft.
On February 27, 2026, OpenAI announced that it had completed a $110 billion funding round at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion. Amazon committed $50 billion, with an initial $15 billion investment and the remaining $35 billion to follow once certain conditions are met. Those conditions could reportedly include reaching an AGI milestone or completing an IPO. SoftBank and Nvidia each invested $30 billion.
