FIDO Alliance Highlights Verifiable Digital Credentials and AI Agent Authentication as Key Trends
The FIDO Alliance has long promoted passwordless authentication. Passkeys can reduce the risks of password breaches and phishing, but do not necessarily verify a user’s real-world identity. Verifiable digital credentials, or VDCs, allow trusted institutions to issue identity data and can complement passkeys, strengthening the reliability of identity verification in financial, government and cross-border services.
FIDO’s Taiwan chapter recently shared observations from a Paris seminar, identifying VDCs, AI agent authentication and hardware security as three major trends. As AI agents increasingly conduct transactions or access services on users’ behalf, experts have proposed a “Know Your Agent,” or KYA, framework. They also stressed the use of a hardware root of trust to authenticate agents while meeting compliance requirements under the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act, or CRA.
