OpenAI Deepens US Energy Department AI Science Partnership

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-23 · Last active 2026-07-23

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission brings together its 17 National Laboratories, universities and industry to combine artificial intelligence with federal scientific data, advanced computing and experimental facilities. The program aims to double the productivity and impact of U.S. research and innovation within a decade. OpenAI began its formal collaboration with Genesis in 2025, seeking to turn frontier models into strategic scientific infrastructure while keeping researchers responsible for methods and validation.

On July 22, 2026, OpenAI pledged $4 million in Codex access for roughly 2,000 Genesis researchers and $3 million in API support for two large-scale scientific campaigns. Participants will also be eligible for as much as $10 million of API usage for every $2.5 million spent. The initial campaigns are expected to target higher-temperature superconductors and map the “machine-accessible frontier,” identifying problems AI can tackle with existing knowledge, data and computing.
