Google announced the leadership overhaul in August 2026, handing Koray Kavukcuoglu full responsibility for Gemini model development and operations while Hassabis shifts toward Alphabet-wide AGI strategy. The company also said the Gemini App had surpassed 950 million monthly active users, giving the service one of the largest consumer footprints in generative AI.
