Google Reportedly to Back $5 Billion Texas Data Center for Anthropic

Google is continuing to build power-intensive U.S. data centers to expand Google Cloud and its AI computing capacity. Missouri’s land and transportation infrastructure are well suited to a large campus. The $15 billion project will affect local employment and power-grid development while setting a state record for a single investment, underscoring the scale of Big Tech’s race to build AI infrastructure.

On May 20, 2026, Google announced plans to build a data center in New Florence, Montgomery County, bringing its total infrastructure investment in Missouri to $15 billion. The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and apprenticeships. Google has signed agreements to add more than 1 GW of new power-generation capacity and is working with Ameren on more than 500 MW of capacity. It is also establishing a $20 million Energy Impact Fund to help residents lower their electricity bills.

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude family of models, is a major competitor to OpenAI in the generative AI market. Through funding and access to Google Cloud TPU computing capacity, Google parent Alphabet could strengthen its cloud AI business and gain greater insight into demand for AI models, while providing Anthropic with the infrastructure needed to train large models.

As of July 19, 2026, reports said Alphabet planned to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, beginning with a $10 billion cash injection that would value the company at $350 billion. The remaining $30 billion would be released in stages subject to performance conditions, alongside about 5 GW of Google TPU computing capacity.
