Chunghwa Telecom Develops 5G- and AI-Powered Rail Digital Twin to Help Taiwan Railway Cut Emissions

Chunghwa Telecom has used 5G, AI and IoT to develop smart-rail digital twin technology that synchronizes operating and equipment data from physical trains with virtual models. The system helps Taiwan Railway Corporation’s operations control center monitor train conditions in real time. The technology supports smarter railway management and could also reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions from transportation.

The technology is being tested on Taiwan Railway’s EMU800 electric multiple-unit trains. By analyzing operating data and optimizing driving practices and energy management, it is estimated to cut carbon emissions by about 9.3%, close to 10%. The disclosed information does not specify the project’s investment, testing dates or timetable for full deployment, and its results await confirmation from actual operating data.
