OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Family With Three New Models

As generative artificial intelligence becomes more widespread, the global technology industry is moving beyond basic information retrieval and conversation toward an era of AI agents capable of performing work on people’s behalf. The shift will redefine how companies approach digital transformation and is expected to fundamentally change everyday office work for white-collar employees. U.S. technology giant OpenAI unveiled its new GPT-5.6 model family on July 16, 2026, including Sol, Terra and Luna. It also launched the ChatGPT Work agent, giving subscribers who pay $20 a month access to a new feature that can autonomously perform complex tasks across applications and files, significantly improving office automation efficiency.

OpenAI and Anthropic continue to compete for the generative AI market, where model performance, product portfolios and free access have become key tools for attracting users and developers. OpenAI is preparing to expand its GPT-5.6 lineup, while Anthropic has extended its free Claude Fable 5 promotion to lower the barrier to entry, underscoring intensifying competition between the companies.

OpenAI said it would launch three GPT-5.6 models — Sol, Terra and Luna — on Thursday, but has not yet disclosed their pricing or full specifications. Anthropic, meanwhile, extended its free Claude Fable 5 promotion through July 12, prolonging the no-cost trial period as it continues to pursue new users and market attention.

OpenAI used the Latin words for “sun, earth and moon” to name the three capability tiers of GPT-5.6, originally intended to distinguish its flagship, balanced and low-cost models. But Sol evoked Solana’s SOL token, while Terra and LUNA revived memories of the 2022 collapse that erased about $40 billion in market value, quickly turning the names into a talking point in crypto circles.

OpenAI began a limited preview on June 26, 2026, before fully rolling out GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna on July 9. Solana’s official X account promptly mocked CEO Sam Altman as “Sam Altcoinman,” with the reply drawing more than 90,000 views and over 2,000 likes. The three APIs are priced at $5, $2.50 and $1 per million input tokens, respectively.

OpenAI has not publicly confirmed GPT-5.6, but ChatGPT users this week have widely reported more coherent responses and deeper reasoning, along with longer wait times. This has fueled speculation that the platform is conducting A/B testing with a subset of accounts. If true, OpenAI is testing the performance and computing costs of its next-generation model, with potential implications for competition in the generative AI market.

Recent hands-on tests indicate that the suspected new model excels at complex tasks such as generating 3D games and simulating robots, with some users describing it as better than Fable 5. Market rumors suggest GPT-5.6 could be released as early as June 25. However, OpenAI has yet to disclose the scale of the testing, model parameters, pricing or a firm timetable, and the claims still await official confirmation.
