Intel Urges PC Makers to Adopt 18A Chips as AI Demand Strains Legacy CPU Supply

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-20 · Last active 2026-05-20

CPUs produced on Intel’s mature process nodes, including Intel 7, have long powered mainstream PCs, servers and industrial equipment. But rising demand for data-center processors driven by generative AI has tightened capacity allocation on older nodes. Intel’s push for its most advanced 18A process is critical not only to supplies for PC brands but also to whether its process transition can gain a firm foothold.

As of July 20, 2026, Intel had urged major PC manufacturers worldwide to expand their use of CPUs made on the 18A process while prioritizing products made on older nodes, including Intel 7, for server and industrial customers. The company also notified some customers that it would no longer accept additional orders for certain older CPUs. Reports did not identify the affected models or disclose the scale or value of the shortages.

Intel Admits It Rushed 18A, Says Next-Generation 14A Is Ahead as AI Inference Demand Grows2026-06-04 · 1 reports · similarity 0.80

Intel is seeking to revive its foundry competitiveness with the Intel 18A process, but Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner acknowledged that its research and development team had previously moved too quickly, at one point exceeding the company’s ability to execute. Stable mass production of 18A will be critical to Intel’s efforts to catch up with TSMC, lower manufacturing costs and win external customers.

Intel has recently adjusted its Intel 18A strategy, prioritizing process stability and performance rather than continuing to pursue an overly aggressive timetable. The company said its next-generation Intel 14A process has benefited from the technology and experience gained during the 18A rollout and is currently ahead in development. Intel also expects rising demand for AI inference computing to drive revenue growth in its data center business.

AI-Fueled CPU Demand Strains Intel Supply, Opening Door for MediaTek and AMD2026-04-28 · 2 reports · similarity 0.81

AI computing is shifting from model training toward inference and AI agents, reducing the GPU-to-CPU ratio in servers from about 8:1 to 4:1, with the figure potentially approaching 1:1 in the future. CPUs handle data orchestration, memory management and system coordination. Rising demand has turned Intel's production capacity into a bottleneck, giving MediaTek and AMD an opportunity to reshape the market.

Intel raised CPU prices by about 10% twice between late 2025 and April 2026, while lead times for some models stretched to one year. Insufficient capacity created a multibillion-dollar revenue shortfall. MediaTek's Chromebook chip shipments are estimated to grow by more than 40% in 2026, with MK8189 shipments reaching 7 million units, while AMD's share of the server CPU market is closing in on 50%.
