X Relaunches Android App After Year-Long Rebuild

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-21 · Last active 2026-07-21

Elon Musk-owned X has rebuilt its Android application after years in which the version lagged its iOS counterpart, at one point failing to load posts opened from links. The project matters because Android dominates smartphone use in many global markets and because a modern code base should let X ship features faster as it expands beyond social media with products including X Money and X Chat.

X released the rebuilt app on July 20, 2026, after nearly a year of development, making it available to existing users through Google Play. Written from scratch with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, the software is designed to improve scrolling, loading and notifications. Product head Nikita Bier called it one of X’s largest engineering projects. Grok helps developers code faster, but X disclosed neither an AI contribution share nor the rewrite’s cost. Performance on older devices and support for Spaces remain works in progress.
