UK Formally Launches Storm Warrior Program to Develop Homegrown Uncrewed Wingmen

After the setback of the canceled Mosquito program, the Royal Air Force has recalibrated its effort to build Europe's first sixth-generation air force. The new program aims to develop loyal wingmen capable of operating alongside Typhoon fighters, F-35s and future sixth-generation aircraft. Envisioned as a cornerstone of future air defenses, the initiative has drawn close attention from the international defense and aerospace technology sectors.

The Royal Air Force formally launched the Storm Warrior program at the Global Air and Space Chiefs' Conference on July 17, 2026. About $406 million is expected to be allocated through the Defence Investment Plan. With an emphasis on pragmatic cost control, the program aims to achieve the first flight of its initial Collaborative Combat Aircraft concept demonstrator by 2030, paving the way for rapid deployment at scale.
