OpenAI Adds BNY, Nubank CEOs to Both Boards
OpenAI operates through a dual structure in which the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation oversees OpenAI Group PBC, requiring directors to balance commercial expansion with the mission of ensuring AI benefits the public. Adding senior banking executives broadens the board’s expertise in regulation, risk and large-scale operations as OpenAI deepens its ties with financial institutions. Vélez built Nubank into Latin America’s largest digital bank, while Vince leads BNY, a financial-services group with more than 240 years of history.
OpenAI said on July 21, 2026, that Nubank founder, Chairman and Global CEO David Vélez and BNY Chairman and CEO Robin Vince had joined the boards of both the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC. Nubank has more than 135 million customers, while Vince has run BNY as CEO since 2022 after 26 years at Goldman Sachs. OpenAI disclosed no transaction value or compensation tied to the appointments, presenting them as governance additions intended to support responsible deployment and global growth.
