Apple Tests Photo Authentication Tool in iOS 27

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-11 · Last active 2026-08-11

Rapid advances in generative AI have made fabricated photographs increasingly difficult to identify by sight, creating new challenges for news verification, professional photography and digital evidence. Apple is seeking to strengthen image provenance within the iPhone ecosystem by linking photographs to information recorded by camera hardware at the point of capture.

An iOS 27 beta has revealed a photo-authentication mechanism called Apple Reference Image. The feature records and verifies information from an iPhone camera sensor alongside an image hash, creating a checkable record of where a photograph originated. The system is intended to help news organizations and professional photographers distinguish images captured by genuine devices from increasingly convincing AI-generated fakes.
