Middle-Market Firms Turn AI and Cash Discipline Into an Edge
The U.S. middle market is increasingly being divided by operating capability rather than topline growth alone. With costs elevated, demand uneven and payment timing volatile, companies that collect receivables faster and gain real-time visibility into liquidity have more room to invest and respond. PYMNTS Intelligence says working-capital discipline and targeted AI tools for forecasting and cash management are becoming core infrastructure, separating resilient operators from firms with weaker data and thinner margins.
PYMNTS reported on July 23, 2026, that 26.7% of middle-market companies operated under high uncertainty in June. Among highly uncertain firms, 82% missed their 2025 performance targets and 35% expect revenue to shrink in 2026. Separately, four in five companies using external working-capital solutions freed an average of $19 million last year. Visa Commercial Solutions said cash-flow unpredictability among low-performing firms adopting AI for working-capital management fell to 17% from 68%.
