Australian Senate Committee Backs Crypto Regulatory Framework Bill

5 reports · First detected 2026-03-16 · Last active 2026-04-01

The Australian government introduced the Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025 to bring cryptocurrency trading platforms and custody providers under the existing financial-services regulatory regime. The bill amends the Corporations Act and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act, directing ASIC to establish licensing and compliance requirements for digital token operators and close a gap in digital asset oversight.

The Australian Senate Economics Legislation Committee recently backed the bill. Subsequent reports said Parliament had passed the related digital asset legislation, requiring exchanges and custodians to obtain financial-services licenses. It is Australia’s first nationwide framework specifically for cryptocurrency platforms. The legislation sets no transaction-value threshold, focusing instead on operator eligibility, asset custody and ongoing compliance.
