MCP Drops Session IDs to Ease Server Scaling

Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol in November 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI agents with external data, tools and enterprise systems. MCP reduces the need for developers to build separate integrations for every model and service. As adoption expands from desktop software to remote, production-grade agents, the protocol’s ability to operate across distributed infrastructure has become increasingly important to companies seeking to deploy AI workflows at scale.

MCP maintainers released the 2026-07-28 specification candidate on May 21, 2026, replacing the initialization handshake and Mcp-Session-Id with a stateless core. Arcade said the change removes the need for sticky sessions and shared session stores, allowing servers to distribute requests through ordinary round-robin load balancers. The final specification is scheduled for July 28 and includes breaking changes, giving developers a new architecture for scaling remote MCP services while requiring migration work for existing implementations.
